Czech legend says the princess Libuše stood on a cliff above the Vltava and proclaimed: 'I see a great city whose glory will touch the stars!' She commanded that it be founded where workers found a man carving a doorstep — práh in Czech — giving Prague its name. Under Charles IV in the 14th century it became the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Its medieval core survived two world wars intact, making it one of the best-preserved Gothic and Baroque cities on Earth.
Prague's Old Town was never bombed in WWII — it survived virtually intact, making it a living medieval museum.
