How locals say hello in Lisbon
Spring (March–May) or early Autumn
Take Tram 28 through Alfama for the most scenic route in Lisbon — go early to avoid crowds.
Phoenician traders called this hilltop above the Tagus estuary Allis Ubbo — calm harbour — around 1200 BCE, one of the finest natural ports on the Atlantic coast. Romans captured it in 205 BCE, and in 1147 Portugal's first king took it from the Moors. Then Vasco da Gama sailed from these shores in 1497 and opened the sea route to India, making Lisbon briefly the richest city on Earth as the hub of a global spice empire.
Lisbon is built on seven hills and is the westernmost capital city in continental Europe.
