Peter Minuit of the Dutch West India Company purchased Manhattan from the Lenape people in 1626 for 60 guilders' worth of trade goods. The Dutch built a fort at its southern tip and called it New Amsterdam. Britain seized it without a fight in 1664 and renamed it New York after the Duke of York — and the city has never looked back since.
