Origin Story

Colonial

Spanish conquistador Pedro de Mendoza landed on the Río de la Plata shores on February 2, 1536. The Querandí people's attacks forced the Spanish to abandon it within five years; Juan de Garay re-founded it permanently in 1580. For two centuries it was a minor outpost barred from trading directly with Europe. Independence in 1816 and massive European immigration from 1880 to 1930 transformed it into the Paris of South America.

Fun Fact

Buenos Aires has more psychiatrists per capita than any other city on Earth — more than New York or Vienna.
