Origin Story

Colonial
๐Ÿ“… Founded 1652Originally CamissaBy Jan van Riebeeck, Dutch East India Company (VOC)

The indigenous Khoikhoi called this place Camissa โ€” place of sweet waters. On April 6, 1652, Jan van Riebeeck arrived with three ships to build a refreshment station for VOC ships rounding the Cape of Good Hope โ€” not a colony, his orders said, just a garden and a fort. Within decades it had become a full colony, and the convergence of Khoikhoi, Dutch, Malay, and British populations created South Africa's most culturally layered city.
