The Banke Bihari Temple is one of India's most emotionally intense โ the priests briefly draw a curtain across the image of Krishna (because it's believed his gaze is so powerful it would overwhelm visitors), creating a rhythm of hiding and revealing that devotees find deeply moving. The evening aarti at ISKCON temple and at the ghats on the Yamuna River is open to all. Vrindavan has over 5,000 temples in a town of 63,000 people โ more temples per capita than anywhere else in India. The town is mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana as the forest where Krishna spent his childhood playing with the gopis (cowgirls) โ making it 5,000 years old in Hindu tradition. The town is also home to thousands of widows who come from across India to spend their final years close to Krishna โ a tradition that ISKCON and local NGOs are now working to transform through empowerment programmes.
