The Yeltsin Centre is one of the most architecturally striking and intellectually honest presidential museums anywhere โ Boris Yeltsin was born near Ekaterinburg and the museum unflinchingly documents the Soviet collapse and chaotic 1990s. Even with no interest in Russian history, the building and interactive exhibits are extraordinary.

Ekaterinburg straddles the EuropeโAsia continental boundary โ there is a literal obelisk monument marking the divide just 17 km from the city centre. The city is also where Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra, and all five of their children were executed in a basement by Bolshevik guards on the night of 16โ17 July 1918, ending the 300-year Romanov dynasty.
