Dali Old Town (ๅคง็ๅคๅ) is charming but Erhai Lake is the soul of the region โ rent a bicycle and ride the 120 km lakeside path over 1โ2 days, stopping at Bai fishing villages. The Three Pagodas (ไธๅก) at the foot of the Cangshan Mountains are best photographed at sunrise when they're reflected in the still pool in front.
Cycling is the dominant mode of transport โ stay out of bike lanes. Almost everyone speaks English.
๐จ๐ณ Dali Fun Fact
Dali was the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom (738โ937 AD) and the Dali Kingdom (937โ1253 AD) โ two powerful independent states that resisted Tang and Song Chinese expansion for over 500 years. The Dali Kingdom was the last territory conquered by Kublai Khan before his invasion of Song China, falling in 1253 โ a fact immortalised in Jin Yong's martial arts novel 'Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils' which imagined a secret Dali royal family of supreme kung fu masters.
๐ณ๐ฑ Amsterdam Fun Fact
Amsterdam has more bicycles than residents and over 1,500 bridges crossing its famous canals.
